Drug Awareness Night educates Skokie students and parents

At a recent Drug Awareness Night held at Lincoln Jr High School, Skokie parents and students alike learned about the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping.

Mary Elston, Senior Case Manager for our Evanston/Skokie Valley Center’s Substance Abuse Prevention program, presented and helped organize the event. High school students engaged with the middle school students, educating them on the dangers of alcohol and e-cigarette/vape use. Interactive activities demonstrated how using alcohol interferes with vision, balance, and coordination, and how using e-cigarettes and vaping cause shortness of breath, abdominal pain, and dizziness.

Metropolitan’s Substance Abuse Prevention Program helps students in Skokie develop positive commitments to their families, peers and communities to encourage healthy, drug-free lives. The goal is to increase prevention-related drug knowledge and resistance skills.
