Ameena Matthews of CeaseFire and the film, “The Interrupters,” to Speak at “I Am a Queen”
Mentoring and inspiration are the themes of the third annual “I Am a Queen” enrichment program for young women, to be held Thursday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Metropolitan Family Services Calumet Center, 235 E. 103rd St., Chicago.
Approximately 175 young women, ages 12-18, will take part in this day of education, entertainment and encouragement. “Our goal is to promote a positive self image, community involvement and setting future goals,” said Tonia Butler, Program Supervisor. “We want to challenge the attitudes and behaviors that fuel teen violence in relationships and in the community.”
Ameena Matthews of CeaseFire, who is focused on ending violence in the streets and is featured in the film, “The Interrupters,” will speak at the event. Participants also will receive information on health and wellness, etiquette, career/education, and beauty/appearance.
In addition, the girls will be treated to entertainment from the Global Girls, Inc., youth performing art group, workshops and lunch. For more information, visit the Calumet Center page of the website.
