Metropolitan Family Services has been matching caring adult mentors with DuPage area youth for more than 30 years. These professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships offer positive adult role models to elementary and middle school children, who can benefit from extra support in their lives.  Our goal is to improve each child's self-esteem, social competence, academic achievement, and positive life choices. In addition we believe that through a combination of time, volunteering, and generosity of spirit, a mentor can give and gain life-long benefits from the partnership.

MetroMentors is always seeking volunteers in preparation for the next school year. We have a special need for male mentors as well as volunteers who are able to donate their time during the school day.

DuPage businesses, corporations, churches and service clubs are invited to partner with us in providing mentors to a school in your area. Your group may be interested in expanding your current involvement at a school or you might feel this is a good time to reach out to a school in your community. MetroMentors will work with your group and the school to tailor a program that works for everyone. Orientations, interviews, training can all be done at your site and at a time that fits your schedule. Think of what just one hour a week can do for a child!

Current Opportunities

Our school based program matches children in grades 1 - 8 with adult volunteer mentors who meet with the child at their school during the day. This partnership with area schools targets students who are at risk academically, socially or emotionally. These mentors will meet with their student one hour each week. Their activities might include: eating lunch together, school assignments, playing games, reading and talking. There is a one school year minimum commitment. Our current school locations are:

Ann M Jeans Elementary in Willowbrook meets every Monday during lunch

El Sierra Elementary in Downers Grove meets every Monday during lunch

Burr Ridge Middle in Burr Ridge meets every Tuesday during lunch

Cowlishaw Elementary in Naperville meets every Tuesday during lunch

Georgetown Elementary in Aurora meets every Tuesday during lunch

Children need positive role models who listen to them and support their goals and needs. A mentor can be that role model who helps a child develop his or her full potential and develops a vision for the future. Children who participate in mentoring programs are significantly less likely to begin using drugs or alcohol, skip school or exhibit aggressive behavior. 86% of children in the program improved academic performance and 80% expect to graduate form High School and College.
